Amlapitta and Hyperacidity

Balancing High Blood Sugar with Ayurveda

Sandhigata Vata and Osteoarthritis

Do you avoid certain foods because you know it will cause hyperacidity? The following case study tells how one person was able to reverse hyperacidity using Ayurvedic principles.

In Ayurveda, Amlapitta is directly correlated to hyperacidity. Amla means sour and pitta means acid. Basically, it is a diet and lifestyle disorder prevalent all over the world. It is mainly caused by eating an excess of spicy and fried foods, irregular eating times, consuming excess water after a meal and stress.

This health condition has been mentioned in classical texts like Caraka Samhita, Susruta Samhita and Ashtangahridayam.

In general, the person who is suffering from hyperacidity develops following symptoms:

  • Heartburn
  • Bitter or sour belching
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Throat irritation
  • Abdominal distention
  • Aversion towards food
  • Mild chest pain
  • Flatulence
  • Poor appetite
  • Tiredness

In this case study with one of my clients, her lifestyle history was also taken into regard as well as food habits, sleep, and exercise.

Female age 34 years presented with the following symptoms:-

  • Amlodgar (eructation with sour taste)
  • Shirashula (headache)
  • Urodaha (burning sensation in chest region)
  • Utklesha (nausea)
  • Agnimandya (loss of appetite)
  • Aruchi (loss of taste)
  • Adhmana (abdominal distension)

She had been suffering from the above symptoms for a year! No other major health problems.

On examination

  • Pulse – 76/min
  • Blood pressure – 126/80 mmhg
  • Cardiovascular system – Normal
  • Central Nervous system – Normal
  • Respiratory system – Normal
  • Per abdomen examination – Epigastric and periumbilical tenderness.
  • Jivha (tongue) – Sama (with toxins)
  • Mala -Mutra Pravrutti (urine and stool) – Normal
  • Prakruti (body constitution) – Pittapradhana vata
  • Bala (strength) – medium
  • Jatharagni (digestive fire) – Mandagni (poor)

In this condition, imbalance or vitiated pitta and kapha dosha are key factors responsible for the whole pathological process.

Pathya – Wholesome Regimen vs. Apathya – Unwholesome Regimen

With this treatment I asked the client not to consume food or drinks that were amla (sour), lavana (salty) and katu (spicy). I also instructed her to avoid lentils and beans, deep fried foods, fast food, junk food and bakery products.

I also advised her to eat at regular times, not engage in divaswapna (daytime sleep), ratri jagarana (awake late at night) or manasik vyatha (mental stress).

Herbal Supplements

Client was given following  herbs to address the symptoms.

  • Avipathi Churnam
  • Triphaladi Churnam
  • Acidact
  • Indukantam Kwath tablets

Benefits of Herbs

These herbs help to detox excess kapha and pitta dosha from the body. It reduces the inflammation of gastrointestinal track. It reduces burning sensation and pain. It helps to reduce utklesh (nausea) and adhmana (abdominal distension). It improves appetite and taste in the mouth.

After following the above treatment for one week, the pain and burning sensation stopped and all other symptoms reduced. Gradually during four weeks of treatment, all symptoms had disappeared completely.

Amlapitta (hyperacidity) was healed and there were no adverse effects seen during the whole program.

Sandhigata Vata and Osteoarthritis

Balancing High Blood Sugar with Ayurveda

Sandhigata Vata and Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease which clinically presents with low-grade inflammation and pain in the joints. Inside the joints there is an abnormal wearing of the cartilage that protects and cushions the joints, as well the synovial fluid which lubricates the joints is decreased.

Sandhigata Vata (Osteoarthritis) is the one of the most common Vatavyadhi (vata disorders) which mainly occurs in Varidhavastha (mature age) due to Dhatukshaya (depletion of tissues) and Vataprakoka Nidan (vata dosha aggravating lifestyle factors).

A male aged 63 years had bilateral knee joint pain and swelling. He is a professor and has a history of standing for long periods of time and is also overweight. He has suffered with pain while standing for 4 years. Initially the pain was mild, which later increased while commuting to work and standing for long hours teaching. For one year, the pain and swelling had increased around the joints as well as developing crepitation (creaking sound from the joints) while walking.

His daily activities like standing for long periods and eating unhealthy foods were exacerbating his symptoms. He consulted with an orthopedic doctorand was prescribed pain medication which offered only temporary relief. Over time, the pain and swelling continued to increase while taking the prescribed pain medication.

When the client came into my office, he was experiencing great difficulty walking, sitting in a squatting position, and was unable to climb stairs. A view of the x-rays previously taken by his doctor confirmed both knee joints have osteoarthritis, particularly the left knee.

Symptoms:

  • Sandhishoola (pain in the joints)
  • Atopa (crepitations in joints)
  • Sandhi stambha (stiffness in joints)
  • Prasarana – Akunchana (pain when moving)
  • Shotha (swelling of joints)

Upon Examination:

  • Pulse – 72/min
  • Blood pressure – 130/85 mm hg
  • Cardiovascular system – Normal
  • Central nervous system – Normal
  • Respiratory system – Normal
  • Crepitus was found in both joints with restricted movements
  • Jivha (tongue) – Sama (with toxins)
  • Mala - Mutra Pravrutti (urine and stool) – Normal
  • Prakruti (body constitution) – Vata/Pitta
  • Bala (strength) – Medium
  • Jatharagni (digestive fire) – Madhyama (moderate)

Goal: improve walking distance and standing time

In this condition, the vata and kapha dosha are vitiated and responsible for the whole pathological process.

Preventive Measures to Help Balance Vata and Kapha

Avoiding or minimizing the use of tikta (bitter), kashya (astringent), katu (pungent), rasa (tastes) and especially avoid sheeta virya ahara (cold foods).

  • Rasayan Sevana (intake of rejuvenation medicine).
  • Regular practice of Abhyanga (self-massage).
  • Avoid sudden jerking movements.
  • Avoiding continuous and excessive use of one joint.
  • Avoid long standing, walking long distance.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight may be the single most important factor.
  • Protecting the joints from serious injury or repeated minor injuries will decrease the risk of further damage to the cartilage.
  • Exercise can help reduce joint pain and stiffness and engaging in light to moderate physical activity may prevent further decline and may even restore some healthy function.

Lifestyle Changes to Help Balance Vata and Kapha

  • Avoid staying awake late at night
  • Sleeping during daytime
  • Avoid excess physical and mental activities

Occupational Changes

Once osteoarthritis is diagnosed the person should reduce shock to the affected joint. Hammering away at deteriorating cartilage is likely to speed up the degeneration. People in occupations requiring repetitive and stressful movement should explore ways to reduce the trauma to the joints. Adjusting the work area and substituting tasks will help reduce the stress on the joints.

Herbal Supplements

  • Triphaladi Churnam
  • Gandharvahastadi Oil
  • Yogaraj Guggulu Vatika Tablets
  • Dhanwantharam Kwath Tablets
  • Dhanwantharam Oil
  • Karpuradi Oil

Initially the client was given Triphaldi Churnam and Gandharvahastadi Oil for shodhana for the purpose of detoxification. These two products help to reduce sama kapha dosha (kapha toxin) and sama meda dhatu (toxins in the fat tissue) which are causing obstruction to nourish the joints.

Later adapted with vatahara chikitsa (vata balancing line of treatment). In this we used Dhanwantharam Kwath tablets and Yogaraj Guggulu tablets internally, as well as external application of Dhanwantharam Oil and Karpuradi Oil which are anti-inflammatory and pain reducing.

After administering treatment for 3 months, the pain, stiffness and swelling were reduced. Gradually, after six months of treatment, 70% of symptoms disappeared completely. Client can now walk easier, sit on the floor, and is able to stand for longer periods of time. The success of this treatment allowed the client to return to his daily routine without any type of discomfort.

Balancing High Blood Sugar with Ayurveda

Balancing High Blood Sugar with Ayurveda

AYURVEDIC GUIDANCE FOR POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME

Glucose is an essential component for all bodily functions and an important source of energy for cellular activity. Even more so, it’s the main source of energy for the brain to function at optimum levels. Glucose is a byproduct from the food we eat and is regulated by insulin, which is a hormone. Insulin regulates the proper balance of glucose and is responsible for levels becoming too high or too low.

When glucose levels become too high, the person suffers from diabetes. There are two types of diabetes: type 1 is an autoimmune disorder (which is less common) and type 2 develops from improper lifestyle habits and is much more common.

What Causes High Blood Sugar?

According to Ayurveda, the root cause of high blood sugar comes from a combination of a sedentary lifestyle and eating too many foods that produce excess kapha or cause excess mucus. Ayurveda calls high blood sugar Madhumeha, which is similar to type 2 diabetes.

With type 2, the person lacks the ability to properly use insulin and excess glucose builds up in the blood. The kidneys try to compensate and some of the excess glucose is removed by the kidneys and excreted in the urine.

Reduced insulin production and decreased insulin sensitivity are the contributing factors for madhumeha known as Hyperglycemia or high blood sugar.

Symptoms of High Blood Sugar

  • Increased thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Increased hunger
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing sores
  • Frequent infections
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet

Amritamehari Churnam is a special herbal supplement for people suffering with high blood sugar. Its herbal actions are antidiabetic and antihyperglycemic and helps to normalize the blood glucose level. It also helps stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin.

Amritamehari Churnam is formulated to reduce excess kapha, kleda (moisture/dampness) and meda dhatu (fat tissue). The unique combination of herbs protects the body from the damage caused by high blood sugar. Chronic high blood sugar damages the nervous system, urinary system, bone marrow, kidneys and the bladder. Amritamehari Churnam helps balance cellular function and reduces fatigue.

Ingredients: Guduchi, Gurmar, Amalaki, and Haldi

Dosage: Take 3 to 6 grams (1/2 tsp.) mixed with warm water about 30 minutes before all meals.

AYURVEDIC GUIDANCE FOR POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME

AYURVEDIC GUIDANCE FOR POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME

AYURVEDIC GUIDANCE FOR POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex disorder which is brought on by an unhealthy diet and lifestyle, environmental factors and genetics. PCOS is the most common endocrine disturbance affecting young women today.

Some common symptoms are absent, infrequent, irregular or prolonged menstrual periods, menstrual pain, ovarian cysts, fatigue, mood swings, obesity, miscarriage, headaches, excessive hair growth, darkening of the folds of the skin, acne, depression and anxiety. If left untreated, PCOS can develop into more serious disorders such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders and infertility.

Modern medicine’s treatment for PCOS mainly focuses on drug therapy to change hormonal balance. While this can bring some relief, it does not address the underlying causes and imbalance.

Fortunately, Ayurveda offers a variety of treatments and protocols to correct the imbalances which cause PCOS and offers the knowledge you need to regain good health. Although there is no one protocol that fits all women, there are many things you can benefit from by paying attention to what you eat and do on a day to day basis.

Let us explore some of the areas that you can change for the better.

An important area to be diligent with is paying attention to what you put on and into your body that may contribute to your symptoms. Constant exposure to common and ubiquitous unhealthy substances are correlated with many hormonal dysfunctions including PCOS, obesity, sterility and more. Xenoestrogens, which are synthetic endocrine disruptors are harmful substances found in food, water and many common products which disrupt the delicate hormonal system balance. We are constantly exposed to these endocrine disruptors through pesticides, herbicides, plastics, BPA, insecticides, dioxin, fire retardants, heavy metals, non-stick cookware, cleaning products, wall paint, body care products, cosmetics and fuel. The more we avoid these endocrine disruptors, the quicker our recovery will be.

This is a vast subject and may seem overwhelming at first. Start with one area to focus on at a time and build on that. For instance, you might begin by choosing to eat a more organic diet or to at least reduce your chemical exposure. EWG.org is an excellent website to check and learn about which foods are relatively safe to eat if they are not organic, and which types to totally avoid.

Once you have a start on your grocery shopping, you can start to pay attention to your cosmetics and body care products. Simply switching your shampoo to something less harmful can have a big impact, and when you make multiple changes, you will be on your way to feeling better. EWG.org is very helpful in identifying which products are harmless and which to avoid. This area extends to what types of cleaning products you use, what laundry soap, what dish soap - everything should be considered.

Next, pay attention to your lifestyle. Are you constantly burning the candle at both ends? Are you frequently surfing the internet? Are you eating on the run? Missing exercise workouts routinely? Are you getting enough sleep? Having a healthy and regular routine will have a very powerful impact on your overall health.

Ayurveda offers us many effective herbal remedies to help the imbalance that is the cause of PCOS. Let’s look at a few:

Triphaladi Churnam: Triphala is a gentle cleansing combination of three fruits which can be taken on a daily basis (with some exceptions - do no take triphala while menstruating or when pregnant). Reducing our toxic load is an important step towards regaining great health.

Ashoka Arishtam: Balancing all three doshas, Ashoka Arishtam is a favorite uterine and digestive tonic that reduces pain caused by PCOS. It addresses hormonal imbalance, decreases uterine cysts and reduces heavy menstrual bleeding. Ashoka is also antioxidant and immune boosting.

Chandraprabha Vatika: is a tonic for the reproductive system and acts as a muscle relaxant due its anti-spasmodic action. It can help correct hormonal imbalance and helps regulate the menstrual cycle. Chandraprabha Vati is especially helpful when used in combination with Ashoka Arishtam.

Kanchanara Guggulu: is a very effective remedy for hormonal balance, is an anti-inflammatory and helps shrink the size of cysts while also reducing pain.

Sukumara Ghritam: is very useful for reducing vata based cysts. It addresses lower abdominal pain, supports balanced hormonal levels and helps maintain a healthy menstrual cycle. Sukumara Ghritam also helps maintain regular elimination.

Sukumaram Kwatham: is useful for helping to reduce severe pain during menstruation, while also supporting healthy digestion and elimination by balancing vata dosha. Sukumara kwatham is useful for shortening the period cycle and regulating delayed periods.

PCOS manifests when all three doshas are out of balance. You didn’t get to this point overnight and it will take some work to regain your health. But don’t worry - every little bit of effort in the right direction will bring you closer to your goal. Your body already has so much within to heal itself if you give it what it needs - good food, good attitude, good exercise, good rest. Where can you make improvements? Every little adjustment you make in your life will make a cumulative gain to your health.

Some people like to work on changing everything at once, and others need to take it one little step at a time. Whichever way is yours is fine: what is important is to make these changes in a way you can maintain them, so they become a part of your life.

Ayurveda attempts to heal the root imbalance rather than placate the symptoms. Because PCOS is a complex disease process, there is certainly not a one size fits all approach to healing. An in-depth assessment and an individualized plan of care is necessary for identifying your particular imbalances and what changes are needed for your health.

For individualized recommendations for your own health concerns, arrange an Ayurvedic consultation at Ayurveda Medicine. I will help you learn how to change your life and routine and guide you on your path to healing.

AYURVEDIC PROFILE GILES

A 30 year old woman complained of painful periods. She had an irregular 25-30 day cycle with a short and scanty flow that was always dark red.The menstrual cramps were a dull ache that started on the first day and continued into day two.She passed small and dark clots. She often had abdominal distension and constipation before the period and then diarrhoea during the period. She had acute headache in her temples and behind the eyes on the first day of the period. She also got a few acne spots just before the period.Emotionally, she was more anxious and irritable before the period.

She runs her own company, has one young child and is happily married. She loves exercising, often running as she says it helps her alleviate stress. She is pale and thin.

Tonque:small, dry, cracked in the middle with some red spots on the sides.Quivering and pale body.

Pulse:weak, thin and faint all over but wiry in the middle positions.

DIAGNOSIS

This is a case of aggravated vata obstructing the flow of apana vayu with weakness in the rasa and rakta dhatus. This means that wastes cannot move downwards. This causes vata to back up and irritate the blood. The aggravated blood tissue(rakta dhatu)then aggravates pitta. So vata-pitta are aggravated, which is irritating the menstrual channel.Dysmenorrhoea is known as krcchra artava and,in this case, the cause are weakness from poor assimilation, recent childbirth and running outside in the cold with cold invading the uterus.

TREATMENT PRINCIPLE

  • Reduce pain
  • Descend vata
  • Nourish rasa and rakta dhatus
  • To regulate pitta and soothe the blood
  • Vata-reducing diet

After two cycles the pain had significantly reduced, bowel symptoms calmed down and headaches stopped. She still felt run down if she overdid it.She still had spots around the period, which showed that some heat signs were present from the aggravated blood and so Sariva was added to the formula.

She continues to progress
